Preserving Our Past - Bringing It To Life

What is the Motherwell Football Club Heritage Trust – and what are we trying to achieve?

The Trust became a registered Scottish charity in October 2024 with a simple purpose: to preserve, celebrate and share the remarkable heritage of Motherwell Football Club – and bring that history to life for supporters, our community and future generations.

Just as importantly, we don’t want our history simply stored away in boxes. We want people to see it, experience it and enjoy it.

That means collecting and preserving memorabilia and archives, developing heritage spaces throughout Fir Park, telling the stories behind the people and moments that shaped the club, creating our Virtual Museum, running stadium tours, and involving supporters and volunteers in the work.

So, what have we done so far?

Over the past 12-18 months, the Trust has launched its Virtual Museum, begun transforming heritage spaces around Fir Park, revamped the Centenary Lounge displays, transformed areas of the Phil O’Donnell Stand, created historical displays in Mrs Baillie’s Bar and helped bring more of the club’s story into the stadium – including the heritage timeline in the Davie Cooper Stand. Behind the scenes, there has been just as much work. Around 900 match programmes have been scanned, more than 300 items of memorabilia photographed, a collections database established and volunteers brought together to help catalogue and protect the club’s heritage.

And our stadium tours have proved hugely popular too — with over 50 small group tours delivered and 75 gift vouchers sold in the six months to the end of April 2026.

Who is behind it?

The Heritage Trust is run by a small group of volunteer Trustees, supported by a growing team of volunteers, supporters, donors and friends of the Trust. None of what has been achieved would have been possible without that collective effort.

And what’s next?

The next major chapter is already underway: transforming the Davie Cooper Stand concourse into a Heritage Trail, telling the story of our club, its great players, managers, teams, matches and adventures around the world.

There is much more planned beyond that as we continue developing the collections, our digital museum, stadium heritage and the ways supporters can become involved.

To mark our first year, we have now published the Motherwell FC Heritage Trust’s first Annual Report, covering our progress, the people involved and our plans for the future.

History Takes To The Walls At Fir Park

The first stage of a major new Heritage Trail through the Davie Cooper Stand concourse is taking shape.

The first corridor tells the story of Motherwell Football Club from its beginnings in 1886 to the present day — a timeline charting the people, moments, triumphs and challenges that have shaped our club across 140 years.

And this is only the beginning.

Over the next two weeks, further displays will celebrate the managers who made their mark at Fir Park, the teams who brought major honours home to Motherwell, and the players whose performances earned them a special place in our history.

The Heritage Trail will then continue to grow, bringing more of our story to life — including memories of some of the club’s most memorable matches and the remarkable overseas tours that took Motherwell to Spain, France, South America and South Africa.

The aim is simple: to transform the Davie Cooper concourse into a journey through the history of Motherwell FC — giving supporters of every generation the chance to discover, remember and celebrate the stories that make our club special.

This will become a key part of our popular Fir Park Stadium Tour, which will be expanded and relaunched this autumn. The new tour will take visitors deeper into the story of the club, using the Heritage Trail to bring the people, places and moments of our history to life.”

Off To Make Memories

European football is calling once again.

Motherwell have discovered their opponents in the UEFA Conference League, with a trip to the Faroe Islands awaiting the Steelmen as they take on Havnar Bóltfelag in the second qualifying round. The draw has handed supporters another opportunity to follow the club across Europe and create new memories on foreign shores.

For many clubs, European football is an occasional adventure. For Motherwell, it is another chapter in a remarkable international story that stretches back almost a century.

Long before overseas tours became commonplace, Motherwell were carrying the name of the town far beyond Scotland’s borders. In 1927, the Steelmen travelled to Spain and returned with trophies and headlines after defeating some of the country’s leading clubs. A year later came the famous tour of South America, where Motherwell earned admiration across the continent. Then followed pioneering tours to South Africa in 1931 and again in 1934, helping establish the club’s reputation far beyond British football.

These were not simply football matches. They were journeys that introduced Motherwell FC to the world, creating stories that still fascinate supporters today.

Now, nearly 100 years later, another generation of fans prepares to follow the club abroad. The destination may be different, but the spirit remains the same: adventure, friendship, football and memories that will last a lifetime.

The full story of Motherwell’s extraordinary international history is told in ‘Well Beyond Scotland’, the latest publication from Steve Young, in association with Motherwell Football Club Heritage Trust.

Packed with remarkable tales, rare photographs and forgotten adventures from across the globe, it reveals how a club from Lanarkshire became one of Scottish football’s great travelling pioneers.

Fan Zone Brings History to Life at Fir Park

Motherwell FC’s 140th anniversary celebrations took another step forward this weekend with the launch of a vibrant new fan zone inside the John Hunter Stand turnstile – where past and present met in spectacular style.

Delivered by the dedicated volunteers of Motherwell Football Club Heritage Trust, supporters were transported back to the club’s golden era of overseas adventure, showcasing the famous tours of 1927 and 1928. At the heart of the display were the iconic Copa del Rey trophy – won after defeating Real Madrid – and the Argentina Cup from the historic South American tour.

The response from supporters was outstanding. Fans turned out in their hundreds – including visitors from Denmark, Germany and Portugal – queuing to get a close-up look at the silverware and capture photos with these remarkable pieces of Motherwell history. For many, it was a rare chance to connect with a story that still defines the club’s identity nearly a century on.

Nick Mackie, Trustee and Head of Operations, said, “This is exactly what the Heritage Trust is about – bringing our history to life in a way supporters can see, feel and be part of. To have hundreds of fans engaging with these trophies, taking photos and sharing the moment shows just how powerful our story is. These tours put Motherwell on the world stage – and they still inspire today.”

The exhibition also marks the beginning of a wider storytelling project. The Heritage Trust has announced the upcoming release of Steve Young’s book, Well Beyond Scotland, due this autumn, charting these extraordinary tours in detail. Supporters can now register their interest and pre-order here.

Attention now turns to the next major event in the anniversary calendar. On Friday 15 May – on the eve of the final game of the season – the Heritage Trust and Former Players Club will host a special gala dinner at Dalziel Park. The evening will feature manager Jens Berthel Askou alongside club legends Willie Pettigrew, Stevie Kirk, Stephen Craigan and John Gahagan. Tickets are now available here.

Adding to the matchday experience, the fan zone also featured a barista coffee cart operated by Bean2Work, a community interest company dedicated to training people for careers in hospitality – ensuring the initiative delivers both heritage and community impact.

The fan zone is a Club initiative, working with LCL Landscaping & Groundcare to create a multi-use space between the John Hunter and Davie Cooper Stands to enhance the match day experience for supporters and visitors.

Fir Park Revamps Continue

Motherwell Football Club Heritage Trust has once again delivered at Fir Park, unveiling a striking new heritage installation within the Phil O’Donnell Stand that continues to bring the club’s story to life for visitors and supporters.

Following last year’s successful transformation of the main entrance, the Heritage Trust has now turned its attention to the staircase – creating a journey through six defining eras of Motherwell FC’s history. As fans make their way up, they are immersed in a visual timeline that captures the evolution of the club across generations.

A key element of the revamp is a series of glass panels enhanced with contravision graphics, each celebrating four iconic managers – John Hunter, George Stevenson, Bobby Ancell and Tommy McLean – alongside standout teams from their respective tenures. The effect is both modern and evocative – blending contemporary design with deep-rooted heritage to create a powerful connection between past and present.

At the first-floor landing, a large display case has been transformed into a vibrant tribute to the club’s travelling support. Featuring a colourful montage of photographs submitted by fans, the installation captures the spirit of following the ‘Well across Europe on UEFA adventures. From distant stadiums to unforgettable away days, the images tell a story that statistics alone never could.

“Miles Travelled, Songs Sung, Memories Made” perfectly encapsulates the display – highlighting the passion and loyalty of the Motherwell support, whose journeys are now permanently woven into the fabric of Fir Park.

This latest project is another example of the Heritage Trust’s commitment to preserving and showcasing the club’s rich history in innovative and engaging ways. Coming up next is a major transformation of the Davie Cooper Stand concourses, planned for over the summer.

With each new installation, Fir Park becomes not just a stadium, but a living museum – celebrating the people, moments and memories that define Motherwell Football Club.
